Merrill Lynch Settles Another NFL Player's Claim Related to Financial Advisor Isaiah Williams

Merrill Lynch has agreed to pay $1.25 million to resolve claims brought by former NFL player Sean L. Smith concerning the conduct of a former advisor who later became the subject of regulatory and criminal scrutiny.

According to regulatory records, Smith filed his customer complaint in July 2025 and sought $3.5 million in damages. AdvisorHub reports that the claim alleged that former Merrill advisor Isaiah T. Williams Jr. failed to act in Smith's best interest and recommended an unsuitable asset allocation strategy.

According to AdvisorHub, the settlement marks another significant customer dispute connected to Williams. Merrill previously agreed to pay $9.5 million to resolve claims brought by former Miami Dolphins safety Reshad Jones. Jones had sought $16 million in damages and accused Williams of misappropriating funds and engaging in improper outside business activity.

Authorities alleged that Williams improperly transferred substantial sums from Jones' accounts between January 2022 and March 2024. Prosecutors claimed Williams moved funds through numerous transactions into accounts under his control and to an alleged accomplice.

Williams resigned from Merrill in December 2024 while the firm conducted an internal review of related allegations. In April 2025, FINRA barred Williams after he refused to cooperate with its investigation.

Jim, Stephany and the whole team were a God send.  We felt like we were put into a situation where we had no advocate. Jim’s team came in with a strong, well laid out strategy on how to get our story heard. Where our outside compliance company had no ability to help, our Broker Dealer was impenitent, and the regulators were aggressive pursuing vague rules, Jim came like a barricade against an assault we did not understand. Though you pay member dues to be affiliated with FINRA and a B/D, you have no voice. The only thing that is truly heard in this un-level playing field is a bulldog’s bark like Jim’s. I would encourage anyone to call Jim and his team to find a real ally in the tough and complicated world of securities regulation. They are truly the best.
